Sketching in Alias

Project a Sketch on Geometry

Initially, you need to make sure the program knows where to save the projection image files that it will create. (If you are getting an error about not being able to save files, this is probably the issue). Do a File > Open and navigate in the Look In tab to the project folder you want to use. The project folder should contain "wire" and "pix" folders. Click on the triangles beside the Project tab and choose "Set Current". Once this is done, you can Cancel out of the Open dialog box.

Follow these steps to take a sketch and project onto geometry (surfaces):

  • Switch back to the Default mode (Preferences > Workflows > Default). You cannot project a sketch in the Paint mode.
  • Select the geometry by either Pick > Surface or Pick Object
  • Open the Plane/Layer Editor panel (Windows > Editors > Plane/Layer Editor) and select the canvas you want to project
  • Project the layer by going to Canvas > Canvas > Project Sketch. Leave it at the default setting.

If your graphic card will support layered shaders, you should be able to see the projected sketch by DisplayTgls > Shade. Otherwise, you need to do a Direct Rendering (Render > Direct Render). If it gives a warning about no lights, add lights by selecting Render > CreateLights > Create Defaults.
