Bio (top)

Tim Purdy has been teaching in the Industrial Design Program at Georgia Tech for more than 13 years.  He has worked to help students apply technology to the design process by understanding the most effective way to use technology for research, ideation and presentation while respecting the traditional methods.  This year, Tim is teaching the Intro to 2D & 3D, Alias Studio and Advance Presentation Design courses.

Tim’s experience is not limited to teaching but includes more than 20 years working in the corporate environment for a Fortune 100 company, at the University level doing cutting edge research and now as the President of his own design service company.  He draws on this extensive knowledge to help find unique and innovative solutions on a wide range of projects.  This knowledge includes Director and Flash programming, computer rendering and modeling, and animation for architectural, educational and marketing videos.

As a research assistant, he helped model and render concepts and the final production designs for the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Torch.  Concept ideation included exploring alternate material for the glass crown and body, laying out internal components and working on manufacturing methods.  Final design elements included modeling the complete torch for manufacturing in Alias Studio, and finding potential vendors for production.

Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia

Participated in Team Effort for the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch; April 2001 - November 2001, Participated in a team effort through the Georgia Institute of Technology to help engineer design, prototype and determine manufacturing methods for 17,000 torches, ceremonial caldrons and lantern used in the 2002 Olympic Torch Run. Responsibilities included participating in design reviews, modeling forms in Alias Studio, generating renderings and animations for reviews, helping to determine manufacturing methods, coordinating 3D output with vendors to create prototypes and functional units, and creating drawings for manufacturing proposals.

Research Assistant for the Collaborative Product Development Laboratory & Instructor; Sept. 1995 - Present, Responsibilities include setting up and maintaining four Silicon Graphics Indy Modeler computers with Alias Studio and Pro Engineering, researching new collaboration technologies and methods, acting as the liaison with the Rapid Prototyping Lab and the Imagine group, and creating a graduate level course that surveys the different rapid prototyping technologies.

MultiMedia Specialist; July 1995 - Aug. 1995, Developed multimedia presentations that are used for lectures in an international business course. Responsibilities included developing course outline, identifying visual data, creating graphics layout and integrating material together using Photoshop, Illustrator and PowerPoint software on a Macintosh platform.

Graduate Research Assistant;

-July 1994 - June 1995, Investigated the use of new technologies in the product development process for General Electric Co. and the Coca-Cola Co. Research included replacing traditional product photography with computer renderings and using animation to illustrate the function and repair of a new dispensing valve.

-Sept. 1992 - June 1993, Investigated cultural influences on the design of an international refreshment kiosk for the Coca-Cola Co. Research included defining the vernacular architecture of five target countries, compiling human factors data, creating a research questionnaire, and interviewing international students from the five target countries.

Graduate Teaching Assistant;

- Sept. 1994 - Dec. 1994, Taught graduate course in computer modeling, rendering and animation using ALIAS Studio & PowerAnimator.

- Sept. 1993 - June 1994, Taught undergraduate course in the creative aspects of black and white photography.

McDonnell Douglas Electronic Systems Co., St. Charles, Missouri

Pricing Analyst - Business Management, Visual Simulation Systems, July 1991 - Aug. 1992, Created cost estimates for external pricing proposals that ranged from $3 million to $10 million, developed baseline cost estimates and performed risk analysis for a new projection system, and established a cost estimating system to improved response time and accuracy of estimating department.

Design Engineer, Visual Simulation Systems, Jan. 1987 - July 1991, Directed the design and installation of interface structures between the Multiview Display System and flight simulator used in the training of airline pilots. Achieved a cost reduction of 50% over previous interface platforms - Redesigned blackout system used on Multiview Display System. Improved aesthetics, functionality and reduced installation time - Directed field installation and integration of the Multiview Display Systems in the following locations; Albuquerque, Tampa, Toronto, Canada and Hyderabad, India - Team Leader for Mechanical Engineering High Performance Work Team. Team investigated alternative shipping methods and new designs for Multiview Display System.
